The Campbell Cultural Heritage House, Inc. (CCHH) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity organization spearheading the restoration and historic preservation of Captain James Campbell's home. This organization was Incorporated in 2008 and continues to work toward the total completion of his
house in phases.
Our organization initially came about after viewing a New Jersey documentary interviewing individuals associated with the Morris Canal. Florance (Campbell) Van Horn shared information about her father, James and his involvement on the Canal. As “we”, a small group of his family, watched this film, “we” were inspired to take action; action against the property being auctioned as well as action to revitalize the dwelling since it had fallen into serious disrepair.
Captain Campbell’s only living grandchild, at that time, Emma (Groves) Grey was contacted for her opinion. She was totally in favor of restoring the house and using it as a facility within the community to illuminate the contributions of African Americans on this waterway.
The home’s historic significance was confirmed by the State of New Jersey awarding a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) letter in the areas of transportation and ethnic heritage. Attorney Stuart C. Ours became our Legal Advisor assisting us with all legal matters and our organization was officially formed.
