The Campbell Cultural Heritage House, Inc. (CCHH) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity organization spearheading the restoration and historic preservation of Captain James Campbell's home. This organization was Incorporated in 2008 and continues to work toward the total completion of his
house in phases.
Our story begins with a man, a Black man, “free” born in
New Jersey who worked hard to provide for his family.
The purchase of his home (1889) established a legacy that produced and inspired the telling of his importance as African American history, a family man, a Canal Captain, a man of faith, and a “free” man who faced adversity. His challenges make him relatable to anyone and everyone who has faced some sort of trial, test, and situation that impacted them
in some way.
The CCHH Mission is to highlight and preserve the history of the African American experience on the Canal by heightening awareness and understanding of said presence during this era. In addition, our goal is to be a voice for African American culture and heritage.
